May’s catastrophic night

How else to say it? What an idiot. Theresa May took a huge gamble and lost. From having a majority government, she’s now going to have to do a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party to govern the country.

The danger now is what happens to Brexit. Britain’s approach could now change, and May might now keep Britain in the single market and customs union. What kind of Brexit will that be? The EU now holds the whip hand in the negotiations and this means Britain will be offered a terrible deal. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has already stated that he would sign any deal offered by the EU. With larger numbers in parliament and a few Tory rebels, he might get his way.

My own feeling is that May won’t last very long, certainly not the length of this parliament. The knives are out for her after an awful campaign in which Corbyn showed her how to do it. Added to that was the ridiculous Tory manifesto which she’s already had to perform one of her infamous u-turns.

So what next? On Monday week, Brexit negotiations begin and a wounded Theresa May will be leading Britain into these talks, the most important talks in years. Her authority has been weakened, and she has no plan.

After her awful track record at the home office, she should never have been given the top job. She’s simply not up to it as she’s proved. I don’t hold much hope of her delivering the Brexit that 17.4m people voted for last year.

All to play for now.
